Delray Beach History
Delray Beach, Florida’s history is rich and diverse, dating back to its earliest known inhabitants, the Jaega people. The area was also inhabited or passed through by the Tequesta Indians. In 1876, the United States Life Saving Service established the Orange Grove House of Refuge to aid ship-wrecked sailors. This area was named for the tropical fruit trees found there, but it remains unclear who planted them.
By 1884, a group of African Americans from Florida’s panhandle had purchased land near the House of Refuge and began farming, marking the beginning of non-indigenous settlement. By 1894, this community had grown large enough to establish the area’s first school. In the same year, William S. Linton, a Congressman from Michigan, bought land west of the House of Refuge, aiming to develop a farming community initially named after him. However, after a hard freeze in 1898 damaged crops and caused financial hardship, many settlers left, including Linton himself. To rejuvenate the area, the settlement’s name was changed to Delray in 1901, after a neighborhood in Detroit.
The arrival of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad in 1896 was pivotal for Delray’s development, boosting the local economy, particularly in agriculture. Delray’s early 20th century saw significant growth and development, including establishing various churches and community organizations. Henry Sterling, a key figure in Delray’s development, was instrumental in diversifying and strengthening the local economy through various ventures.
Delray Beach has evolved from humble beginnings as a small farming village to a vibrant city known for its beautiful beaches, diverse art scene, and dynamic events. It has received multiple awards and recognitions, including the “Most Fun Small Town in America” by Rand McNally, USA TODAY & the Travel Channel in 2012, and the “Best Small City to Start a Small Business” by Verizon Business in 2018.
