Palm Beach History

Palm Beach, Florida’s history is rich and fascinating, beginning long before its establishment as a renowned tourist location. The island, originally known as “Lake Worth,” was first inhabited by the Jaega Native Americans around 3,000 years ago. The area began to attract white settlers in 1872, and a significant event occurred in 1878 when a ship, the Providencia, wrecked off the coast with a cargo of 20,000 coconuts. The settlers salvaged and planted these coconuts along the coast, contributing to the area’s tropical landscape.

Palm Beach’s transformation into a tourist haven began with Henry Morrison Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil Company. After retiring from the oil business, Flagler played a pivotal role in developing Florida, particularly Palm Beach. He built the Royal Poinciana Hotel on the shore of Lake Worth in 1894, which, at the time, was the largest wooden structure in the world. Following the success of this hotel, he opened the Palm Beach Inn, later renamed The Breakers, in 1896. Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway connected these hotels, facilitating tourism and growth.

The town of Palm Beach was incorporated on April 17, 1911. Flagler’s influence extended beyond hotels; he built his winter home, Whitehall, in Palm Beach, now a historic house museum. The town’s development was further shaped by architect Addison Mizner, who designed numerous structures in the Mediterranean Revival style that defines much of Palm Beach’s aesthetic today.

Throughout its history, Palm Beach has been a destination for the wealthy and famous. It has been home to prominent figures like John F. Kennedy, who had his “Winter White House” there, and Donald Trump, who transformed Mar-a-Lago into a club. The town is renowned for its beauty, upscale shopping districts such as Worth Avenue, and its status as a community of philanthropy and luxury.
